They’re tearing up all the roads back in Union County. When I went away to school they tore up Mt Pleasant (my address) as part of the Lake Access Project. For a whole summer the kitchen table had a layer of red dust on its top and the grass outside smoked in the slightest breeze. When the road was finished Mt Pleasant was the best stretch of two-lane blacktop in the county, perfect for drag-racing.
In my three years off of school, they went after SR44 and US27, widening them as part of the infrastructure initiative that came with the stimulus package. I liked the idea of jobs, but I hate that to get anywhere in the county I had to take back-roads, and detours, and even on these side ways was sometimes met with orange and white barricades. The symbolism got to me: road blocks and deferrals. Now they’re in the heart of Liberty, digging up its main streets.
But this is South Bend. They’re laying pipe on Angela. The construction has followed me northwards. It’s a reliable alarm clock, I can say that for it.
