Liz and I found a strange decorative candle kit that had a long yellow candle and beneath it, in a sea-shell plinth, 14 Peep-like yellow wax ducks, 13 with their eyes and beaks painted (I miscounted for our project “The Apostles”), the 14th incomplete (“blind”). We decided to make them a part of something larger—and I scripted a meandering sort of “vegetarian theodicy.” What’s stranger still, is the thought that they formed the “foundation” for the yellow candle—so when it was lit, it would entomb them all in melted wax, or maybe so melt them all, as well. I’m not certain that a few of their number won’t be melted down in the near future.
